Tonga’s first anti-corruption commissioner, New Zealander Chris LaHatte, was sworn in by the Tongan Cabinet on Friday, July 5. Mr LaHatte is a lawyer from Wellington. Appointed by the King in Council March 28th this year.
“This is an important milestone in our nation’s ongoing commitment to promoting transparency, integrity and accountability among public officials,” government.
Tongan lawyer Mele Fakatouato Mangisi was appointed as the office’s first executive director in June and the office began operations on July 1. “It took 17 years to establish this office since the legislation was passed in 2007,” Ms Mangisi said.
The Office of the Anti-Corruption Commissioner is an independent body responsible for investigating and preventing corruption in Tonga. It has the power to review, investigate and prosecute corrupt practices by public officials.
“These relationships are critical to the effective functioning of the office and to promoting a collaborative approach to the fight against corruption,” the new officials said in a statement.
Mr. Rahat, who has extensive experience as a lawyer, mediator and ombudsman, will lead the Office alongside Ms. Mangisi to promote integrity and fight corruption in Tonga.
