Guterres concluded his visit to the Central Asian country with Turkmenistan, where he met with its head of state Berdimuhamedov.
As part of his visit, Guterres attended the inauguration ceremony of the United Nations building.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres is on a two-day official visit to Turkmenistan. Guterres met with the head of state, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who was welcomed at the airport by the leader of the Turkmen People’s State, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The meeting focused on issues such as international security, sustainable development and climate change. It was emphasized that a new phase has begun between the United Nations and Turkmenistan.
Later, Guterres, who unveiled the UN office building, said in his speech that the relationship between Turkmenistan and the United Nations is a model for countries around the world.
Guterres said that at the initiative of Turkmenistan, next year 2025 was declared “International Year of Peace and Trust”. Guterres emphasized that the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia is carrying out effective work in Turkmenistan.
Close and multifaceted cooperation with the United Nations remains a strategic political priority for Turkmenistan, which was elected a full member of the United Nations in 1992 and received neutral status in 1995.
