Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has openly discussed the possibility of his candidacy in the 2027 presidential election, discussing the topic during a Twitter Space session on Sunday, July 7.
Omtata outlined the specific conditions that influenced his decision to run for president, stressing that his motivation stemmed not from personal ambition but from the call of the people.
“The answer is why not? But I’m not running for president not because I want to be president but because people think I’m the best driver of the car they’ve invented.” He asserted.
“If there’s a car that can clearly change the direction of this country, and people think I’m the best driver, it’s my responsibility to do it.”
The reality of running for president
On the practicalities of a presidential campaign, Omtata stressed the need for massive public support and a well-structured approach. He likened the campaign process to wartime leadership, stressing that success requires a collective effort.
“But we’ll figure it out when the time comes. Nothing is ruled out; everything is possible. When we’re at war, you can’t leave the fighting to the soldiers. Wars are never won by soldiers, but by the ordinary people behind them.” He commented.
Omtata insisted on gaining grassroots support and operational clarity before committing to the 2027 campaign, stressing that collaborative leadership was more important than personal popularity.
“I have to lead an indispensable team, not a cult of personality, otherwise I will be framed as a failure of character.” He warned.
“I’m not Superman. There have to be clear terms of participation, but the most important thing is to work as part of a team, not as an individual collecting various roles to successfully pass the exam.”
Omtata also urged electoral reforms, advocating a digital voting system and decentralized announcement of results. He called for election results to be announced at the constituency level to ensure transparency and minimize central manipulation.
“We have to have digital elections. If these things are in place and if the Kenyan people feel that I am the best candidate at a given time, I will safely run for president of this country.” He said affirmatively.
Speaking about the electoral process, Omtata stressed the need to put in place tamper-proof mechanisms so that results can be announced in real time to prevent electoral fraud.
“We must achieve tamper-proof election results that can be announced in real time, not allowing those who manipulate elections time to manipulate and interfere with the results.”
