The leader of the country, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, has pleaded with Malawians not to let the devil take advantage of the painful deaths the country has experienced in the past to create divisions among the people.

Chakwera also asked the country’s police chief to ensure that the police service actually sends people instead of torturing them.
He stated this at a prayer ceremony organised in Lilongwe to mark the country’s 60th independence anniversary.

Chakwera said he was aware of a group that wanted to bring politics into the plane crash that killed Mr Chilima and eight (8) others.
But he stressed the importance of every Malawian taking part in comforting one another as the world continues to be impacted by these painful deaths.
“The work of cleaning these wounds is hard. All of us are working to cleanse these wounds. You religious leaders, breathe the work of these wounds, because without your message of hope and prayer to God, we may go astray and begin to insult the same God who is our comforter,” the leader said.

Chakwera also asked the police not to persecute those mourning the funeral in an excessive manner.
“The law does not allow me to rule over you and I ask the Inspector General to ensure that the Malawi Police Service truly operates as a service and not as a Malawi police force that harms the people,” Chakwera stressed.
The leader reiterated his commitment to serve and improve the lives of Malawians by working with everyone regardless of politics or any differences.

Chakwera said that by identifying people’s wounds, medical and research experts in plane crashes can find answers to healing those wounds as part of this work.
Prior to the leaders’ speeches, Pastor Hamilton Yasin Gama of the CCAP Church in Nkhoma Conference in his sermon warned Malawians of difficulties and sufferings to come.
But Gama stressed that it is inappropriate to curse the world or even insult each other, but rather to be a righteous person.
They give the example of Job, who lost all his possessions, his children died, everything was taken away overnight, but he was still perfect in the world, and he still stood before God.
“Malawians are known for being God-fearing, but we must admit that many people do not act in a God-fearing way,” the pastor said.
