TABERNAKLE, N.J. — Fireworks sparked a fast-moving wildfire that has burned thousands of acres in southern New Jersey, authorities said.
A firework device hit the New Jersey Forestry and Fire Department on Sunday. Wharton State Forest There was a fire on the evening of July 4th.
Around 9 a.m. Friday, fires were spotted from a fire lookout tower near Apple Pie Hill and Batona Campground, and the campgrounds were evacuated for safety reasons.
Officials asked anyone with information about the fire to call the State Park Police tip line.
Officials said the Forest Fire Department worked with the State Parks Police, the state Division of Fire Safety and the Burlington County Fire Department on the investigation.
Authorities said Sunday that the fire had burned about 4,000 acres but was believed to be 75% contained.
Officials earlier said firefighters were using a backfire method, burning areas in front of the main fire to prevent the fire from spreading.
Several roads and trails have been closed.
