Touré told an ECOWAS summit in the Nigerian capital Abuja that financing for economic projects worth more than $500 million in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger could also be stopped or suspended.

“Given these benefits, it is clear that secession will not only disrupt the freedom of movement and settlement of people but will also increase insecurity in the region,” he said.

He added that the withdrawal of the three countries would be a major blow to security cooperation, especially in terms of BroadCast Unitedligence sharing and participation in the fight against terrorism.

ECOWAS leaders gathered at the summit to discuss the treaty’s impact on the Alliance for the Sahel (AS), whose military juntas staged a series of coups in the three countries between 2020 and 2023, seizing control and severing military and diplomatic ties with regional allies and Western powers.

Touré said the two sides will also make decisions on a regional counter-terrorism standby force and regional currency.
