It is no longer surprising that it takes five or six years to obtain a license at Joseph Ki-Zebo University, as the accumulated delays are a long time ago. This situation has caused dysfunction in the functioning of the university and penalized the students who enter this temple of knowledge. Between June 25 and July 1, 2024, stakeholders from the academic community gathered at the same table in Ouagadougou to discuss solutions to the problem of academic delays.
Three months later, in October, high school graduates for the 2023-2024 academic year will have to return to college, and the years-long academic delay remains unresolved. To address this issue, the first officials of Joseph Key Zebo University talked to students, teachers, unions, and administrative and technical staff.
As we know, each sector is subject to a target contract. Solving the problem of academic delays before the start of the 2024-2025 academic year is the priority of the target contract of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, led by Professor Aldjima Thiombiano. Therefore, the goal of this meeting is to find a consistent solution to free the largest university in Burkina Faso from this dysfunction.
For Professor Jean-François Corbianet, the first president of the Joseph-Ki-Zebo University, returning to a normal academic year is indeed possible, but it will inevitably require great sacrifices and strong commitment from those involved. Together with his team, he has developed a strategy as well as an operational plan to put an end to this matter by September 20, 2024.

“In addition to special exemptions from the overtime limit, verification of 75% of the teaching hourly volume of the teaching unit is also a factor to be taken into account in programming. For strict compliance with the teaching program, evaluation and review, a correction jury, a technical support unit for the review of the Faso campus and a weekly monitoring committee are set up,” we read on the university’s Facebook page.
In addition, specific requests were made to various stakeholders related to the delayed sectors. “It is a question of continuing academic activities during the August-September 2024 holiday, even if the actors can take their vacation later,” the Facebook publication told us. Some actors supported the proposal. However, others thought it would be wise to consult the database before deciding on this issue.

In response to the proposals, certain comments pointed out other factors that exacerbate this delay. If they are not taken into account, Joseph Ki-Zebo University faces an endless restart. “I wonder what this passage says, and I quote: “Continue academic activities during the August-September 2024 vacation, even if the actors can take vacation later.” Take the heavy rains in August and September to make up for the lessons, and come back in the dry season to give us vacations as if nothing has been done. I think you have ignored the real reasons for the delay, which include the construction of lecture halls, adequate recruitment of teachers, and the establishment of a correction committee,” wrote Internet user Isuf Saba.
“Even if they don’t have a holiday for five years, if we don’t really address the problems that cause delays, such as the lack of lecture halls, the lack of doctors (teachers, editor’s note), delays in corrections and deliberations, even ten years later we will have the same delays,” added Olivier Zoma.
