Late rains led to delays in land preparation and sowing
Key Information
-
The national food security situation is stable, with most households still consuming home-grown staple foods. Some rural households are supplementing these foods with market purchases, particularly in areas of traditional cereal deficits in the south and west of the country. Severe food insecurity is projected to be minimal (IPC Phase 1) for January-March 2015.
-
Above-average cereal production in the last agricultural season has led to increased market supplies, resulting in below-average prices for staple foods across the country. Maize prices are currently 23 percent lower than last year and 14 percent below the two-year average.
-
Erratic and below-average rainfall in the north of the country in November led to unusually dry conditions in the far north of the country, including some cereal surplus producing areas. The cereal season started 20 days later than usual in the north. This delay slowed down agricultural activities, which usually generate additional income for poor households at this time of year.
