An estimated 40% of American workers have been fired at least once in their careers. When this happens, companies often say, “It’s not personal. It’s not about you or your performance. We just changed our priorities and made a strategic shift.”

It’s like the commercial version of “The problem isn’t you, it’s me.” Just like a breakup, it feels bad.

This happened to a man named V, who was working for the same company as her husband when he was fired. For V, the experience was a shock. It left him and his husband with many unanswered questions.

Today’s show tells the story of that layoff. We turned the couple’s questions over to HR experts to get the inside scoop on layoffs and help them find the answers.
