Peleliu Island’s leadership has submitted an application to Palau’s national government outlining its desire for infrastructure projects beyond the planned U.S. military expansion at Peleliu Airport.
Peleliu leadership, led by Governor Emes Roberts, said: “While we understand the U.S. military’s interest in expanding Peleliu Airport… we the people of Peleliu also have proposals for important civilian projects.”
The proposals include dredging the channel leading to Peleliu Port, building a seawall between Ngbekal and Elochel, and paving a state road. Peleliu also seeks to improve its water supply, electrical grid, sewage system and recreational facilities, including sports fields, parks and picnic areas.
The request, addressed to President Surangel Whipps Jr. and congressional leaders, stressed that Peleliu wants to be included in discussions about U.S. military activities in the state to ensure a “mutually beneficial” outcome.
The U.S. Marine Corps Engineer Detachment Palau (MCED-P) is currently renovating the World War II-era airfield on Peleliu Island, a project considered “critical to enhancing the United States’ military strategic capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.” The restored runway is named after Eugene Sledge, a World War II veteran whose book “Traveling with Veterans: On Peleliu and Okinawa” chronicles the brutal Battle of Peleliu.
