The last time Costa Rica was represented by such a small number of delegates was in Montreal (Canada) in 1976.

Flag Bearer

The CONCRC Executive Committee designated Milagro Mena, a representative figure in women’s road cycling, and 400-meter hurdles athlete Gerald Drummond as flag bearers for the race.

This Friday, the Olympic delegation representing Costa Rica at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11, was sworn in at the headquarters of the National Olympic Committee of Costa Rica (CONCRC).

Costa Rica will have six athletes representing five different sports, including surfer Brisa Hennessy, women’s road cyclist Milagro Mena, 400m hurdles athlete Gerald Drummond, judoka Sebastian Sancho, and swimmers Alondra Ortiz and Alberto Vega.

The athletes will be joined by their respective technical teams: Paula Herrera as coach, Keylor Quirós as mechanic for Milagro Mena, Marco Brenes as coach for Gerald Drummond, Ian Ignacio Sancho as coach for Sebastián Sancho, Pablo Camacho as coach for Alondra Ortiz and Alberto Vega as . The technical teams are selected jointly by the respective federations and the athletes.

Likewise, it was announced that Milagro Mena and Gerald Drummond will be the flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, thanks to their careers in the sport and the experience both have gained in their second Olympic Games.

“It means so much to me to receive this news, it’s an indescribable feeling. I don’t have words to thank you for this gesture since I started participating in the Olympics. A few years ago, I always dreamed of becoming a flag bearer, and now God has given me the great blessing of becoming a flag bearer, and to be a flag bearer at the Olympic Games, at the greatest sporting event. What could be better? All the hard work over the years is reflected here,” said Mena with emotion.

Drummond added: “I am very excited about this appointment and there is no doubt that being the flag bearer for Costa Rica is a reward for all my hard work and dedication over the years.”

Alexander Zamora, President of the Costa Rican National Olympic Committee, said: “We are incredibly proud of the athletes who will represent Costa Rica at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Each of them has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence, embodying the best of our country. We will be honored to see Milagro Mena and Gerald Drummond carry our flag, a symbol of our team’s strength and unity. I am confident that all of our athletes will compete with courage and put Costa Rica on the map.”

On the other hand, the Prime Minister of the Republic, Mr. Arnoldo André Tinoco, and the Director of Communication, Marketing and Nation Branding, Ms. Adriana Acosta Rivas, granted Costa Rica the option to use the national brand “Costa Rica” for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Members of our Olympic team are part of the “National Brand Ambassadors, Essential for Costa Rica” program.

The support team for the athletes in Paris will be made up of Teresita Anchía, head of delegation; Nadia Chinchilla, registration and logistics; Fanny Huezo, physiotherapist and interdisciplinary team coordinator; Lucía Marín, methodologist and Safe Sport assurance officer; Guillermo Mendieta, physician; Erick Solano, orthopedic surgeon and press attaché David Castillo.

Brisa Hennessy’s competition will be held in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, and at the request of the athlete, the National Olympic Committee has arranged for a coach, a physiotherapist and a video analyst to be present. As a doctor, Dr. Gustavo Castillo.

CONCRC president Alexandre Zamora said the delegation followed the so-called “Olympic calculator,” whereby the organization determines the number of certifications based on the level of athletes and allocates functions to support teams.
