Koror, Palau — Palau Customs and Border Protection (BCBP) confirmed on July 2 that its database server had been attacked by ransomware. The attack was discovered at 11:00 a.m. and the data on the server was encrypted.
Officials stressed that operations at Palau International Airport were not disrupted.
Initial investigations revealed a ransom note, but the attackers have yet to contact the victim to negotiate a ransom payment.
The Treasury Department’s Information Security Systems Division (ISSS) is working with outside cybersecurity firms and law enforcement to determine the full scope of the incident. The department promised to provide more information but did not provide a specific timeline.
In March this year, the Ministry of Finance suffered a cyberattack that paralyzed the financial system and forced the government to temporarily adopt manual payroll. According to reports, more than 20,000 documents were stolen from the system, but the government insisted that the stolen information did not cause any harm.
