Government withdraws threat to withdraw from CITES

Six months after threatening to withdraw from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the government of Botswana has backed down from a pledge to leave the treaty if it was banned from selling its ivory stockpiles.

The move comes months after a coalition of more than 50 conservation groups issued a joint statement calling on governments and policymakers to block plans by Botswana and other southern African countries to resume the ivory trade.
