LCBO workers go on strike for the first time since talks broke down

For the first time in history, thousands of workers at Ontario’s major liquor retailers are on strike.

The strike deadline was initially set by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which represents thousands of employees at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, as 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Once that deadline passed, the strike officially began, with the LCBO expressing its disappointment in the OPSEU leadership for initiating the strike.

While the LCBO said it hopes to reach an agreement soon, it also said its latest proposal, presented Thursday afternoon, responds to some of the workers’ demands but does not see a counterproposal from the union.

The LCBO said its stores will be closed for 14 days, but online ordering and free home delivery will still be available.

If the strike lasts more than 14 days, the LCBO said its 32 stores would reopen for physical shopping three days a week with limited hours.
