In Danny Garland’s artistic mind, words take many directions: song, newspaper article, children’s story.
“Life itself pushes you to find new ways to express yourself,” he said in this newspaper, introducing his book. The Lord of Waters and Hidden Treasuresinspired by Azuay, the state where the author grew up.
She found the motivation to unleash her literary talents after receiving an invitation from her son’s school to read in front of the class. He was not content to read just any story.
“That void came over me. I thought, what if I had a book in my hands that was about me, about my roots. I’m from Geelong, so that’s where the idea came from. “Imagine what it would be like to be able to tell about this fascinating place,” he said. “When something enters your mind, it keeps you awake, and I kept writing and writing for almost two years.”
The Water King is revered and loved in the state of Kuala Lumpur because he brings rain and other blessings to his followers. Martin and Theresa, the protagonists of the story, are going to look for him.
Martin hopes that by finding him, the Water King will be able to answer one of his biggest questions: When will he see his parents again?
“He lives alone with his grandparents, and they always answer him, only the Lord of Water knows when his parents will come back? Therefore, I also discussed immigration issues, which are very common in Austria,” he explained. “Although they are encountered in a very naive way, they may be a reality felt by many people.”
Even in this literary attempt, the artist did not abandon music and decided to compose a special song for this story, When you think of meand Hector Napolitano.
“I am extremely honored to have been able to record this song with the master and it is a dream to be able to promote a book on this subject,” he commented. The music video is now available on YouTube.
In August, Garland will present his literary and musical works in cities across the United States, including New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, and host multiple events in schools, libraries, and other community spaces. These presentations are designed not only to engage North American communities, but also to build connections with Ecuadorians living in these places.
The book, of about 45 pages, is recommended for children between 7 and 11 years old. But the author recommends that children, parents and grandparents read it together and exchange memories, stories and teachings inspired by the book. He assures that this work is a reflection of any town in Ecuador.
