The Road Infrastructure Agency of the Republic of Bulgaria announced on Thursday that work on the Bulgarian side of the Friendship Bridge will begin on July 10.
The estimated time to complete the repair work on this section of road is approximately 4.5 months per lane.
CNAIR reported Thursday evening that “the Road Infrastructure Agency of the Republic of Bulgaria announced today that work on the Bulgarian side of the Friendship Bridge (Giurgiu-Ruse) will begin on July 10, 2024.”
Bulgarian agencies said construction work will be carried out for 10-12 hours a day, with daytime hours depending on the specifics of the works to be implemented, rather than a complete stop to traffic.
“The work process will be organized and carried out so that vehicles pass in two staggered directions on the lane where work is not being carried out. The works are planned to be carried out in 6 stages. In the first two, major repairs are carried out on the support of the facilities on the Bulgarian territory. A section of about 400 meters will be closed for construction work,” said the Agency for Road Infrastructure of the Republic of Bulgaria.
According to her, first of all, traffic will be restricted on the entrance lanes to Bulgaria, and then on the exit lanes in the direction of Romania.
The estimated time to complete the repair work on this section of road is approximately 4.5 months per lane.
“For better traffic organization, traffic control will be done by adaptive traffic lights. It will be repositionable and can be located on the relevant parts of the bridge under repair. The specifications and height of the device do not allow safe operation at night, and protecting the lives and health of commuters and construction workers on site is of vital importance. If certain activities can be carried out safely in the dark, then it will be done”, the Bulgarian agency also said.
The Road Infrastructure Agency of the Republic of Bulgaria stipulates that the Danube Bridge route on the Bulgarian territory is part of the I-2 highway with a total length of 1,057 kilometers.
“Since it was put into use in 1954, it is 70 years old and has not undergone any major repairs. The reinforcement of the joints was completed 22 years ago, and the waterproofing materials and asphalt pavement were replaced in 2011. The technical project of the installation renovation provides for the complete replacement of the asphalt layer, panels, waterproofing materials, a new retaining system, markings, etc., said the Bulgarian company.
The contractor for the main works of the Danube Bridge is Podul Dunării Public Limited Company. The contract value is BGN 44,877,228.68 (including VAT). The duration of the works contract is 730 days.
Construction supervision will be carried out by “Podul Danube-PII-Strol”. Their contract value is BGN 848,400 including VAT.
