Super cop appointed to tackle violence
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has appointed a police officer who successfully reduced crime in Mexico City to a key security post.

Mexico’s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday announced the appointment to a key security post of a police officer with whom she successfully reduced crime in the capital, Mexico City, who must move the challenge to scale in a country battered by terror and drug violence.
The former mayor of Mexico City, from the left in power, appointed Omar Garcia Harfuch, 42, as federal security secretary (minister), in charge of the same department as her in the capital from 2018 to 2023.
The president-elect, who will be inaugurated on October 1, stressed at a press conference that “we have achieved a 50 percent reduction in homicides and a 60 percent reduction in serious crimes, which is historic.”

Omar Garcia Harfuch was shot and killed during an attack on his police convoy in Mexico City on June 26, 2020. He accused the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel, the country’s most dangerous, of sponsoring the attack, which killed two of his escorts and a police officer. Passersby.
Mexico, a country of 129 million residents, sees about 30,000 homicides a year, most of which are linked to violence by drug traffickers and organized crime.
The new minister, barely a month after his appointment, announced the strengthening of “BroadCast Unitedligence and investigative capabilities”, which, according to him, is a decisive factor in his success in Mexico (9.2 million inhabitants).
Give up all repression
He also supports Claudia Sheinbaum’s project to consolidate the National Guard, a 133,000-member security force created by outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to replace the perceived corrupt federal police.
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, was victoriously elected on June 2, promising to follow the outgoing president’s security policy: addressing the root causes of violence (poverty, exclusion) through social programs, rather than total repression and a head-on fight against the cartels.
Omar Garcia Harfuch will replace current Security Minister Rosa Icela Rodriguez, who will become a government minister, equivalent to the Ministry of the Interior but not under the control of the security forces.
