Democratic revolutionary current rejects Cairo Conference, calls for clear vision for peace

July 3, 2024 (Cairo) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement’s Democratic Revolutionary Current (DRC) North has rejected an invitation from the Egyptian government to attend a conference aimed at unifying Sudan’s political forces to end the war and restore civilian rule.

According to multiple sources, the Vice President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Butsena Dinar, wrote to the leadership of Tagadum, the Coordination of Civilian Forces for Democracy, urging them to develop a clear vision for the political process before engaging in such discussions.

Sources confirmed to Sudan Tribune that Dinard apologized for not attending the Cairo meeting and stressed that the coalition needs to prioritize developing a clear vision to end the war in line with the agreement reached at the founding conference.

Dinard also stressed the importance of resolving internal organizational issues and establishing leadership structures, including a committee to oversee the political process, before taking broader steps to unite Sudan’s civil forces.

On May 31, after the conclusion of its founding congress in Addis Ababa, the Tagadoum Revolutionary Committee announced the approval of a political vision centered on “stopping and ending the war, building a nation, and completing the revolution.”

The alliance also announced its intention to launch preparations for a round-table discussion to unify the positions of revolutionary, anti-war and democratic forces.

The final statement of the founding congress stressed the importance of prioritizing these tasks in order to prevent the political process from being exploited to “revive the old regime and undermine the December Revolution.”

The Taqaddum leadership informed its members that the Egyptian government had invited them to attend a meeting on July 6 and 7 to discuss ending the war and addressing humanitarian issues. The alliance announced on July 1 that its members would attend the Cairo meeting along with many other political forces.

The Cairo conference will include other political forces in the democratic camp that support Sudan’s army in its fight against the Rapid Support Forces.
