A police officer was shot and killed during an operation targeting a drug gang in Rio de Janeiro’s Ciudad de God favela on Wednesday, local authorities announced.
Rio’s military police explained that the operation was aimed at “combating vehicle theft and preventing attempts to expand territorially by the (criminal) factions responsible for much of the armed conflict in the region.”
“A group of armed men opened fire on the police. A clash ensued and six men were injured. They were rescued and taken to the Lourenco Jorge Hospital.details a police press release.
Rio’s municipal health department told AFP that “six unidentified people with gunshot wounds” were “already dead” when they arrived at the hospital.
During the operation, law enforcement officers seized “Two assault rifles, four pistols, three radio transmitters and a large amount of narcotics”.
Police announce opening “Procedure for determining the situation” During the raid, it was specifically noted that police officers were equipped with “body cameras” whose images were accessible to investigators.
According to Rio’s Education Secretariat, 12 schools had to close on Wednesday to protect the safety of students.

In February, another large-scale police operation left at least seven people dead in several Rio favelas.
