A police officer was shot and killed during an operation targeting a drug gang in Rio de Janeiro’s Ciudad de God favela on Wednesday, local authorities announced.

Rio’s military police explained that the operation was aimed at “combating vehicle theft and preventing attempts to expand territorially by the (criminal) factions responsible for much of the armed conflict in the region.”
