This Wednesday, the President of the Republic contacted the families of the victims and missing. Fishing boat sinks Depart Leiria Beach and head to Figueira da Foz on Saturday.

The information is contained in a note published late this afternoon on the Internet on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.

“Following the note issued this morning regarding the tragic sinking of a fishing boat, the President of the Republic has been in touch by phone with the relatives of the victims and missing persons, following the visit of the Prime Minister today, during his next visit which will be in Figueira da Foz on Saturday”, the text reads.

In a note issued this morning, Head of State Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his condolences to the families of the fishermen who lost their lives in the shipwreck and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

In the afternoon, Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro announced that he would travel to Figueira da Foz, in the Coimbra district, to learn about the ongoing search and rescue operations and to express solidarity with the families of the victims.

The Figueira da Foz Maritime Police reported that of the 17 people on board the sunken boat, three were still missing, three were confirmed dead and 11 were rescued.

Initially, information indicated that seven people were missing as a result of the sinking.

Pedro Cervans Costa, captain of Porto and commander of the local maritime police in Figueira da Foz, said the rescue was carried out by the Porto da Nazaré lifesaving station together with the fishing boat.

“It is not known what happened, the boat capsized one mile west of São Pedro do Moel. The disturbance at sea was not serious but the cause has not yet been determined,” he said in a statement carried by Figueira TV channel Foz.

04:33 An alert was issued to the local command of the Nazaré Maritime Police that the fishing vessel “Virgem Dolorosa” was listed.

Cervance Costa explained that the sunken vessel had been “located and visible” and that the search and rescue operation was continuing with the help of an Air Force helicopter, a drone from Nazaré and a diving team.

According to Aurélio Ferreira, president of the Marinha Grande Chamber of Commerce, the “Virgem Dolorosa” is a 24-meter-long and 6-meter-wide trawler, with a port in Figueira da Foz.

Most of the people on board were from the city of Figueira da Foz, and two crew members from Indonesia were rescued.
