A woman in central Indonesia was found dead in the belly of a snake that swallowed her whole, police said on Wednesday (July 3), the second python killing in South Sulawesi province within a month.
Police said relatives launched a search for the 36-year-old Siriati after he disappeared Tuesday morning after leaving his home to get medicine for his sick child.
Her husband Adiansa, 30, found her slippers and pants scattered on the ground about 500 meters from their home in Sitba village in South Sulawesi province.
“Soon after, he found a snake about 10 metres from the path. The snake was still alive,” local police chief Idul, who like many Indonesians goes by only one name, told AFP.
Village secretary Iyang told AFP that Adianza became suspicious after noticing the python’s “very large” belly. He asked villagers to help cut open the python’s stomach, where her body was found.
Such incidents are extremely rare, but several people have been swallowed by pythons in recent years.
Last month, in another area of South Sulawesi, the body of a woman was found inside the belly of a reticulated python.
Last year, residents of the province killed a python about eight metres long that was found strangling and eating a farmer in the village.
In 2018, a 54-year-old woman was found dead inside a 7-meter-long python in the town of Muna in Southeast Sulawesi.
The year before, a farmer in West Sulawesi went missing and was later found devoured by a 4-meter-long python on a palm oil plantation.
