Oman Para athletics competition to be held on December 15 and 16

Muscat: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, through the Oman Paralympic Committee, will organise the Oman Para Athletics Games on December 15-16 at the Media Hall of the Bashir Sultan Qaboos Complex.

Dr. Mansour bin Sultan Al Tawki, President of the Oman Paralympic Committee, said that Para athletics is an extension of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth’s efforts to empower people with disabilities in society and provide them with services in various fields such as rehabilitation, sports and education. This forum is in line with Oman’s interests in the cause of people with disabilities in various fields and is an extension of these efforts.

Al Tawqi added that more than 150 disabled athletes from Oman and Gulf clubs will participate in the para athletics events. Teams from the GCC include Al Tamouh Club from Kuwait, Al Ras Club and Al Madina Club from Saudi Arabia, Khorfakkan Club and Al Thiqah Brain and Intellectual Disabilities Club from the UAE.

He pointed out that the Para Games are aimed at inspiring people with disabilities and creating a stimulating environment for them to showcase their talents in games and sports. The competitions include various track and field events such as running, throwing and jumping, suitable for people with different types of sports, vision and paralysis disabilities.

Al Tawuki stressed that the athletics games provide an opportunity for the technical staff of the teams to select the best athletes in various competitions and include them in the national teams in their respective categories. He highlighted the achievements of athletes with disabilities at the Arab and Olympic levels, expressing pride and appreciation for their achievements in sports.

Arbitration Courses

Dr. Mansoor al Tawqi mentioned that the committee will organize an arbitration course to improve the qualifications of track and field referees and train technical teams capable of managing all types and stages of track and field competitions. The course, with Tarek al Suwaidi as the lecturer, is targeted at 30 students, including track and field referees.

This course aims to provide professional outcomes for the administration and arbitration of Para athletics. The course covers the arbitration law for Para athletics, arbitration in athletics and important legal changes in these competitions. The course also aims to familiarize participants with the latest laws for the arbitration of Para throwing tools (such as the shot put, javelin and discus) which differ from those of able-bodied athletes in terms of weight and disability category.
