Iraqi unions call on international community to condemn MPs’ remarks on judiciary

“The remarks made by US Congressman Mike Waltz are blatant and unacceptable interference in violation of the UN Charter and there is no legal or international justification for this,” the Iraqi Trade Unions and Federations said at a meeting attended by Al-Sumaria journalists. “Interference,” stressing that “attempts to weaken or undermine the judiciary are interference.”

Iraqi unions called on “the U.S. Congress to respond to these statements” and on the international community to “condemn these actions and statements, as they set a dangerous precedent that could go much further if not corrected,” the conference said.
Iraqi trade unions and federations said they “work on the basis of mutual respect with countries around the world and reject interference in internal affairs,” adding that “the remarks made by the above-mentioned representatives aroused the feelings of Iraqis and were interference in internal affairs.”

She continued, “We have prepared future plans on this issue, including sending this statement to the State Department and then to the U.S. government,” explaining that “this opinion represents the views of the Iraqi street and society and is not political or partisan.”

Muayyad Rami, head of the Journalists Syndicate, stressed that “we do not accept any attack on Iraq, its sovereignty and judicial institutions. We are here to represent the opinions of Iraqi trade unions.”

It is noteworthy that 14 Iraqi trade unions were present at the meeting, including journalists and lawyers.
