Oman’s Para athletics team performed well at the West Asian Para Games held in Sharjah, UAE, winning a total of 12 medals, including 3 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals, bringing Oman’s total medal count at the 4th West Asian Para Games to 24.
The sixth day of competition saw fierce competition and impressive athleticism from athletes with disabilities from across the region, with Omani representatives demonstrating exceptional skill and determination to take the podium in several events.
Mohammed Mashaeihi won the gold medal for Oman in the shot put with an amazing score of 9.60 meters. Talib Baroushi performed well in the F56 discus event with a throw of 28.57 meters, adding another gold medal for Oman. Taha Harasi won the third gold medal in the long jump with a score of 4.88 meters.
In addition, Omani athletes won six silver medals, namely Mohammed al Qasimi in the shot put, Fouzi bin Salem al Habishi in the F54 javelin with a score of 20.10 meters, Saif al Muqibli in the 200-meter dash with a score of 23.95 seconds, Rayyah al Abriya in the discus with a score of 9.53 meters, in the javelin with a score of 8.87 meters, and Iman al Shamsiya in the javelin with a score of 12.19 meters.
Sheikha al Hamadiay won bronze in the javelin with a score of 8.22 meters and in the discus with a score of 8.12 meters, while Qusay al Rawahi won bronze in the long jump with a score of 5.78 meters.
Key support
Recalling Oman’s success, Mansour bin Sultan Al Tuqi, head of the Omani delegation to the West Asian Para Games, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Omani team and stressed that winning 24 medals is important in consolidating Oman’s position on the Paralympic stage. Al Tuqi praised the athletes’ dedication and perseverance and stressed that the support of various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and OQ Company, played a key role.
Al Tuqi also stressed the importance of parental support in nurturing the talent of athletes and creating an environment conducive to success. He expressed confidence in the future competitions and reiterated Oman’s commitment to further enhance excellence in disability sports.
Omani athlete Talib Baroush expressed great happiness at winning the gold medal in the discus event and pointed out the importance of this achievement in achieving the West Asian Para Games.
“I am very happy about the medal I won in the discus throw. This result is the result of my hard training and strong determination,” he said.
Al Balushi added: “These achievements are thanks to teamwork and the thorough preparation of coaches and administrators before and during the competitions. We urgently need more support and attention for para sports in Oman and we hope that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth will continue to support the Oman Paralympic Committee so that they can provide more opportunities for athletes with disabilities.”
