President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed his appreciation to his Mozambican counterpart, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, for the peace, security and stability mission carried out by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force in Cabo Delgado.
President Hichilema said maintaining peace in Mozambique would bring peace, security and stability to the entire SADC region.
The Head of State noted that President Nyusi has placed peace and stability at the centre, which is one of Zambia’s responsibilities as Chair of the SADC Troika of Politics, Defence and Security.
President Hichilema held bilateral talks with his Mozambican counterpart Nyusi today at the Presidential Palace to discuss social and economic cooperation to promote development in both countries.
The head of state highlighted the progress made in the construction of the one-stop joint border between Ghanida and India, which the two governments hope will be open 24 hours a day to facilitate trade.
“Today we will discuss supporting our economy, investment and trade,” President Hichilema said.
President Hichilema thanked the President for accepting the invitation for a state visit and said the visit was crucial for fruitful cooperation between the two sides.
He also extended his best wishes to the people of Mozambique ahead of the general elections in October 2024.
President Hichilema called for a democratic process to ensure peace before, during and after the elections.
He praised President Nyusi for the leadership he provided to Mozambique during his two terms in office.
Meanwhile, President Nyusi said more efforts were needed to strengthen Zambia’s relations with the country.
The Mozambican head of state hopes that the discussions will center around improving economic relations between the two countries.
“We need to do more in economic diplomacy, that’s why we are here,” President Nyusi said.
He thanked Zambia for its support since liberation which has helped the country reduce the threat of terrorism.
