BEIJING: China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday (June 28) expressed condolences over the death of a woman who tried to stop a knife-wielding man after he attacked two people at a bus stop outside a Japanese school in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou.
On Monday, a man stabbed a Japanese woman and her child at a bus station in Suzhou, a technology hub and historic canal city about an hour’s drive from Shanghai. A spokesman for the Japanese Embassy confirmed the attack.
The suspect has been detained and investigations are ongoing, the spokesman said, adding that the motive for the crime was not yet clear.
Two Japanese were slightly injured and released from hospital on the day of the incident, while Chinese citizen Hu Youping died on Friday from serious injuries he sustained after preventing the attackers from boarding a bus operated by a Japanese school.
“We mourn the unfortunate death of Ms. Hu Youping and extend our sympathy to her family,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a daily news briefing in Beijing on Friday.
She also said that Suzhou City will award her the title of “Model of Justice and Bravery.”
The Japanese Embassy in China also lowered its flag to half-mast to express condolences.
