The National Security Office announced that it had immediately reported to President Yoon Seok-yeol this afternoon about North Korea’s launch of a military reconnaissance satellite, and held a security situation review meeting chaired by National Security Office Director Chang Ho-jin to receive a report from North Korea. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff discussed countermeasures.
South Korean and U.S. authorities assessed that the projectile exploded in the air after flying over North Korean waters for several minutes.
Participants in the meeting that day said, “Despite repeated warnings from our government and the international community, North Korea has once again launched a ‘military reconnaissance satellite’ as it did in November last year. Regardless of whether it was successful or not, it has violated North Korea’s basic principles.” The UN Security Council resolution is an infringement on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, and “is a provocative act that threatens the peace and security of the international community.”
“Our military has decided to maintain a tight security posture to prepare for possible further provocations from North Korea,” he said.
The security situation review meeting on the same day was attended by National Security Office Director Jang Ho-jin, First Deputy Director Kim Tae-hyo, Second Deputy Director In Seong-hwan, Security Strategy Secretary Kang Jae-gwon, Defense Minister Choi Byung-ok, and Crisis Management Center Director Kim Sang-ho.
