What happened today in Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Traunstein and the Berchtesgaden region is shocking. Citizens were asked for the first time before Germany’s bid for the Olympics. There was a clear refusal.
For comparison, the vote in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in May 2011 was two months before the IOC’s decision on the 2018 bid:
Today’s results surprised me. The application for 2022 was rejected by a majority of voters. In places like Schönau (bobsleigh and luge races at the Königssee) or the biathlon (Ruhpolding), the majority of citizens openly supported the Olympics. But overall, the decline in the regions is clear. The highest turnout so far at 55.80% was reported in the market town of GaPa, which has become politicized in terms of sports policy due to the difficult discussions in 2018. In Munich, less than a third of citizens voted. But even if the massive Olympic advertising in the state capital had succeeded and received a narrow yes vote, the application would have failed due to the opposition of the three Bavarian Olympic satellites.
I thought it was fantastic. Especially since the Olympic opposition has recently strongly criticized the dominance of propaganda in national sports policy. My surprise may be due to ignorance, after all, I left two months ago to write my IOC book, which I am still working on, and would have to design the chapters on the 2022 Munich Olympics or the 2022 Winter Olympics in a very different way. So I missed some information, conversations and, most importantly, impressions from the scene.
So congratulations Olympia Opposition (You can find all the necessary information on the well-maintained NOlympia website.) It was then rejected by the International Olympic Committee. Graubünden in Switzerland holds referendum March 2013.
As a journalist (and citizen), I have been working for twenty years to get the relevant cities, municipalities and regions to vote before an application is made. It is finally happening. And, unlike the 2000 Berlin Olympics, the 2012 Leipzig Olympics or the 2018 Munich Olympics, there will be no applications.
A subtle approach to democracy.
Wonderful. Although this time I found the risk of applying to be justified. Until the end I thought the chances were very good.
But this is complete nonsense.
Because the citizens have already made their judgment.
