Tonga’s first female Olympic boxer, Fe’ofa’aki A Kakau ‘Epenisa, will represent her country in the women’s middleweight competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Since making his debut in 2019, the 28-year-old boxer has become a proud symbol of his Tongan heritage, embodying the warrior spirit with every punch.
Despite living in California, Fiofaaki, who migrated from Vava’u, remains attached to his roots and is a proud member of the Tonga Boxing Association.
“I never imagined that a little brown girl from Vava’u, running barefoot through the streets of Masilamia and Rematua, with lole sainisi stains on her fingers, scars from dog and mosquito bites, and frequent scratches from climbing her neighbour’s fruit trees, would one day take Tongan boxing to the world stage,” she said on her GoFundMe page.
‘Epenisa has set up a GoFundMe campaign to support her participation in the Olympics. “Every little bit of help means a lot to me,” she said.
