MANILA: A severe explosion at a fireworks warehouse in the southern Philippines killed five people, including a four-year-old child, emergency services said on Sunday (June 30).

The explosion in Zamboanga City on Saturday afternoon blew a large hole in the ground, scattered debris into nearby buildings and homes and sparked the fire, fire investigator Luigi Chan told AFP.

Four warehouse workers and the four-year-old son of a staff member were killed, Chen said.

The city’s disaster office confirmed the death toll and said 38 other people were injured in the incident, eight of them seriously.

Authorities said they were investigating the cause of the blast, which created a 20-meter-diameter crater, blew away the walls of the warehouse and sent debris pouring onto a nearby soft drinks factory, a grain and flour warehouse and nearby homes.

“The most likely cause of the fire was fireworks stored in the warehouse,” Mr Chen told AFP.

He said the blast radius was more than 3,000 square meters and it took firefighters more than two hours to bring the fire under control.
