One of the greatest athletes in Bulgarian Olympic history, Tania Bogomilova, turns 60 today. She was the first and only Bulgarian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming and was named “Sportswoman of the Year” during the most successful season of her country’s sport.
1988 Seoul Olympics champion in 100m breaststroke, 4th and 6th place in 200m breaststroke and mixed relay, silver and bronze in 200m and 100m breaststroke at 1986 Madrid World Championships, 1985 Sofia European Championships in 200m breaststroke, supplemented by silver in 100m European Championships and combined relay in 1986 Sofia and 1989 Bonn, three bronze medals in 1983 Rome European Championships (100m breaststroke) and 1991 Athens European Championships (100m and 200m breaststroke), 1984 Bergen European Championships and 69 national records – this is one of the most popular, beloved and successful figures in the history of Bulgaria with a rich sporting career.
After winning in Korea, the incredible Bogomirova won the silver medal in the 100m breaststroke at the 1989 European Championships in Bonn and the bronze medals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke at the 1991 European Championships in Athens. He continued to compete until 1991. After his career, he worked as a coach in Greece and then at the National Youth and Sports Agency. For many years, he was the executive director and secretary general of the Bulgarian Swimming Federation. He is a member of the Technical Commission for Open Water Swimming of FINA (World Swimming Federation) and from 2003 to the present day a member of the Technical Commission for Open Water Swimming of LEN (European Swimming Federation).
At the height of her fame, Bogomirova was crowned “Bulgaria’s No. 1 athlete” in 1988, her home country’s most successful year yet, when the country won 35 Olympic medals, including 10 golds.
