In a statement, Borg Kuscheri noted that the results of the last election were “extraordinary” and said the Labor Party would offer him the mayoralty if he joined.

He explained that he had proposed to split the leadership of the legislature in two, with the National Party candidate serving as mayor for the first two and a half years while he would take over the rest of the legislature.

“That proposal was always rejected and we finally reached a compromise where Gabriel Micallef would be mayor and I would be deputy mayor for the next five years,” said Borg Kuscheri. Gabriel Micallef ran for the National Party in the last election.

The independent candidate noted that the decision was not an easy one, but he made it with the voters of Mellieha in mind.

He clarified that he is and will remain independent and that this decision does not mean that he will form a coalition with the National Party.

The National Party welcomes the agreement

The National Party welcomed the agreement in a statement, with its candidate set to lead Mellieha Local Council for the next five years.

The National Party said Mellieha councillors agreed that the National Party’s election manifesto would be implemented as they would “consider” all other proposals put forward during the campaign.
