In 2023, the Pan American Development Foundation invited Fundacion Telefon pa Hubentud to create a youth-centered project called “My Story” under the guidance of James Sneek. The program aims to reduce discrimination and foster empathy among young people through different activities.
The project started in March, bringing together eight young migrants and eight locals for a series of six sessions. In the first session, participants got to know each other and attended a workshop on children’s rights and equality. Afterwards, the youth visited each other’s homes, learned about each other’s environment and culture, and deepened their understanding.
Throughout the project, they discussed topics such as culture and integration. In the fourth session, participants expressed their experiences through drawing and painting, reflecting on their experiences in Aruba and their place of origin.
The project culminated in the production of a short film entitled “My Story” in which the young people shared their stories, presenting their visions of family both on a personal level and in the context of Aruba. The film was screened alongside an art exhibit created during the conference.
The group includes young people from Venezuela, Colombia, Haiti, Jamaica and Aruba who share and learn from their cultural experiences. The program is conducted in multiple languages to ensure participation for all participants.
The success of the program has fostered lasting friendships among young people, and the Foundation plans to launch the program in 2025 with support from the Pan American Development Foundation and funding from the U.S. government.
