Corruption is rampant in Malawi and the country’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) recently revealed that it has evidence showing that the fire that broke out at Tikwere House in the center of Lilongwe in May last year was deliberately set by someone to conceal information.

The building, which houses several government offices including the Land Registry of the Ministry of Lands and the government contracting department under the Office of the President and Cabinet, has become the focus of the investigation.
The Acting Director General of ACB, Hilary Chilomba, disclosed that the bureau was pursuing cases related to the fire incident.
He was interviewed on Thursday during a public lecture titled “Corruption in the Land Sector” at the Natural Resources College (NRC) in Lilongwe.
“That fire was deliberately set and people tried to hide evidence. We are investigating cases where some people who own properties such as houses tried to destroy evidence in the land registry. But we still have electronic records of all the information so we will still find the culprits,” Chilumba said.
Although the acting director-general did not reveal the identity of the suspect and the status of the investigation, he said the anti-corruption agency is gradually identifying the suspect.
The fire mainly affected the sixth and seventh floors of the building. The premises remained empty.
