After the Albanian Football Federation Cup, the European University of Tirana football team won another important trophy. UET Sports Club defeated the University of Sport 4:2 in the National University Championship and became the Albanian champion.
On May 8, the final of the futsal tournament, hosted by the Albanian University Sports Federation (FSHSU) and the Tirana Municipality, took place after SC UET defeated the University of Tirana team in the semi-finals.
The team’s coach, UET sports lecturer Marjo Shabanaj, said the importance of this national university championship is very great because both public and non-public universities across the country are participating.
Although the UET Sports Club is a relatively new organization, only 4 years old, it has several teams, like the program itself: Football 11 x 11; Futsal; Mini football and volleyball for men and women; Basketball, table tennis, swimming for men; Mini football with academic and administrative staff.
In its second year, the student football team, led by Shabanaj, a former football player and one of the founders of UET sports programs, won the runner-up place in the Albanian National University Mini Football Championship. The following year, it maintained the same ranking, runner-up for the Albanian team, but now in the mini football event, the men’s table tennis team and volleyball team took third place in the same competition. 2023-2024 can be said to be a golden year, with several important trophies.
Of particular importance was the victory in the Albanian Sunday League Debut Cup, a very popular and widespread competition in European amateur football, organized by the Albanian Football Federation in April. European University Tirana became the first university to participate in the fourth category of the competition.
The UET team, consisting of 18 contestants, students and lecturers, led by coach Tomi Treska and captain Marjo Shabanaj, made a successful debut and won first place with a perfect score.
“What impressed me most was the dedication, responsibility, preparedness and willingness of the academic staff to participate in these trips and give their utmost commitment,” Tresca said. He added that for these students and coaches who received trophies, proving their training and preparation, a policy of support and encouragement should be designed, and why not provide them with honorary bonuses for their voluntary contributions?
“We have a good team and we have improved the team spirit, which is the driving force behind our achievements”, Shabanaj stressed. The student sports club has been helping to identify the right people for each discipline, but according to him, it is always an issue that needs proper attention.
The A-League Cup victory has given the team the goal of joining a big team and competing in the third tier in the future, and next year, with the financial support of the school, SC UET is expected to make the European League University Tour.
Tresca: The trophy itself is not an end, we have witnesses of UET’s sporting quality
Prof. Dr. Tomi Treska has been working at the European University of Tirana for 17 and a half years, almost since its inception. Over the years, he has held various positions within the institution. A connoisseur of pre-school and university education, he served for several months as the head of the Department of Psychology, Education and Sports at the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Letters, has a very clear vision for the development of the sports program and, according to him, the work will continue on the solid foundation laid by the previous leader, Prof. Eddy Puka.
He said that the development of these four main elements will make a significant contribution not only to the future of universities and sports, but also to the well-being of Albanian society.
“Beyond the expertise that UET has provided and continues to provide in the field of psychology, beyond all the experiences and policy documents it has done in the framework of improvement of the education and pre-university system, but not only that one of my goals is to return UET to the top of the sports world.”
Professor Treska stressed that achieving this goal requires improving the quality of teaching in the Sports Studies program, which, in his opinion, is entirely possible at UET, which offers recognized and licensed degrees at three levels of study: Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral, while the entire staff is working to finalize the title.
Professor Tresca said that the popularization of sports is the second element to increase awareness, through the training of department members’ expertise, not only in other universities, but also in nine-year schools and secondary schools, of the importance of sports for improving the quality of life and educating new generations in this spirit. “We need to have more confidence in sports and less prejudice,” he said.
Equally important in this regard is the change in mentality he sees not only in society, parents and students, but also in the institutions and colleagues involved with PE teachers. He believes that these teachers are equal and should enjoy the same evaluation as teachers of other subjects, and the driving force that was ultimately determined was the renaming of the subject from physical education to physical education. This would increase the propensity of students in PE programs to pursue teaching careers in college preparatory schools.
“We hope to affect a change in mentality. The public perception of the subject must change, allowing UET to be a pioneer, as it has done in many other fields,” he further added.
In addition to national impact and contribution, Tresca stressed that it is equally important to include sports in the internationalization process (which UET has been doing for many years), becoming part of exchanges, qualifications and various projects.
The fourth goal is to diversify UET’s sports funding. “By relying on public health funding and donations, through the promotion of sports, but also through competitions, my goal is to achieve financial diversification in terms of communication, internal staff qualifications and increasing sports inventory.”
He said the trophies were important because they served the university, but more importantly left a testimony of achieving and exceeding their expectations of coming to study at UET and embracing new achievements.
“The trophies are not an end in themselves, they are evidence of creating a class of students who believed in their studies in the field of sports and made contributions without any reward. But they are still witnesses to the quality of sports teaching at UET and in a sense, UET owes them.”
The UET has expertise and bears witness to the quality of the project, while continuing its commitment to the organization of the Sports Month at the UET, through the receipt of trophies, certificates for the fair play team or certificates for the best football players and coaches.
