The Official Gazette of French Polynesia (JOPF) published this Friday a decree terminating Philippe Biarez as Minister of Health from June 30 and appointing his interim successor, Deputy Director Karine Vannes. How long she will stay remains to be seen. Philippe Biarez, former director of the Moorea Hospital, was appointed less than a year ago by decree of August 16, 2023. Philippe Biarez has publicly opposed the wage control measures announced by the Minister of Civil Service, Vannina Crolas. He expressed his “deep concern” to the Minister of Health, Cedric Mercadal, in a letter dated February 14, pointing in particular to “unequal treatment and priorities”. On June 13, Philippe Biarez once again took up his pen to denounce the troubled health system in the archipelago and reminded Minister Cedric Mercadal of the “critical situation of the medical staff of the archipelago”.
