531 people died in traffic accidents in the first five months of this year

In the first five months of 2024, there were 1,545 accidents nationwide, resulting in 531 deaths and 1,182 serious injuries. Compared with the same period in 2023, there were 56 fewer accidents (-3.4%), 8 fewer deaths (-1.4%), and 47 fewer serious injuries (-3.8%).

“The main causes of serious road accidents were non-compliance with the legal speed limit – 296 accidents (the same as in the same period of 2023), unruly pedestrians – 208 accidents (22 fewer than in the first five months of 2023), unruly cyclists – 151 accidents (27 fewer than in the first five months of 2023), failure to give priority to vehicles – 142 accidents (14 more than in the same period of 2023), failure to give priority to pedestrians – 141 accidents (17 fewer than in the same period of 2023)”, said Police Commissioner Georgian Drăgan.

During the same period, more than 877,000 traffic violations were imposed, about 86,000 driver licenses were seized and 41,000 registration certificates were revoked.

In the first five months of this year, 11,662 people were caught driving under the influence, of which 6,550 were punished for the offence and 5,112 were prosecuted.

In addition, approximately 1,800 persons under the influence of psychoactive substances were identified and criminal files were created for each case.

“Regarding the statistics of serious accidents before and after the entry into force of the Anastasia Law, from July 13, 2023 to May 31, 2024, there were 51 accidents caused by drunk driving, resulting in the death of some people, which is 10 fewer than the 61 such accidents that occurred from July 13, 2022 to May 31, 2023. In addition, from July 13, 2023 to May 31, 2024, there were 5 accidents caused by drunk driving, resulting in the death of some people, which is 1 more than the period from July 13, 2022 to May 31, 2023, when 4 such accidents occurred,” Georgian Drăgan also said.
