Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Steven Victor announced this week that the local production incentive program will start on July 1, 2024.
The scheme, aimed at supporting commercial production of livestock and aquatic products, will provide feed subsidies to livestock producers and discounts for slaughtering pigs at state slaughterhouses.
The program will also cover part of the cost of piglets on private farms. For example, if a piglet costs $100, the program will pay $35, reducing the farmer’s cost to $65.
For aquaculture, the program will subsidize materials and provide fish fry to aquaculture farms.
So far, 39 livestock farmers have registered for assistance. Interested farmers must register to be eligible.
The program is funded by tobacco and alcohol taxes, allocated under the recently approved 2024 supplementary budget. (By LN Reklai)
