“I think I got fired,” he told the hosts, explaining that he was battling drug addiction at the time. “They didn’t let me go because of that, although it certainly didn’t help. I started to become like most actors who spend a lot of time on a show, and I started to become very expensive to the network. And the network knew that no matter who they kept on the show, the show would go on. As long as they had Grey’s, they were fine.”
He continued: “I wasn’t the guy they hired me to be anymore. So when I got fired, I understood. And Shonda (Rhimes) was really great. She fought to protect us. She protected us publicly. She protected us privately. … But I was probably fired. They didn’t say ‘You’re fired,’ they said ‘You’re not coming back.'”
At the height of his fame greyDuring the show, Dane checked into rehab for a painkiller addiction and had been battling depression for years. He shared that when he joined the show, he had been sober for three or four years, so he was able to differentiate between what was reality and what wasn’t, but overall, he didn’t think he could handle the fame that came with it very well.
“If you spend eight years on Grey’s AnatomyI was fucked up longer than I’d been sober. That’s when things started to go haywire for me,” he revealed, adding that his sudden popularity may have contributed to his relapse. “It was so overwhelming, and I guess I just tried to pretend it wasn’t, and pretend I was OK with it. Pretend you’ve been there, but you haven’t been there at all.”
Dane currently plays Cal Jacobs EuphoriaHe is the father of Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) and one of the few adult characters in the show.
