(ICC) England’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title defence came to an end as India won by 68 runs in the semi-final at the Guyana National Stadium on Thursday to advance to the final.

Jos Buttler’s side came out on top with a fine performance to reach the Super Eight quarterfinals. But they could not overcome India, who have been unbeaten since the start of their campaign. Rohit Sharma’s side easily beat England, batting to 171/7 before thrashing their opponents with a brilliant display of spin.

The defending champions came into the game with just 103 points.

Sharma opened the innings for India and led them back to within one after the early dismissals of Virat Kohli (caught by Reece Topley for 9) and Rishabh Pant, the former of whom was caught by Jonny Bairstow after being bowled for 4 by Sam Curran.

The duo played in perfect harmony with Suryajumar Yadav, and their partnership was not affected at all when rain stopped play for over an hour after the eighth over. They scored 73 runs between them until Sharma was dismissed by Adil Rashid with a brilliant 57 off 39 balls.

Suryakumar continued to score in the next over, scoring 47 runs, hitting Jofra Archer’s slower ball high into the air into the hands of the ever-reliable Chris Jordan.

Jordan then took the ball himself, contributing in the dramatic final overs – which took him to 3/37 and even gave him a chance to complete his second hat-trick of the tournament after dismissing Hardik Pandya (caught by Curran, narrowly winning with 23 off 13) and Shivam Dubey (caught by Buttler, out on the first ball).

However, he took the third wicket in the last over, as Axar Patel narrowly beat Phil Salt for a valuable 10 runs.

Openers Buttler and Phil Salt got off to a good start but the combination of Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah broke the innings in the first half.

Buttler toed Patel’s ball behind Pant’s gloves to score 23 off 15 balls, and Bumrah followed that up with another 5 by tipping Salt’s ball into his hands.

New batsman Bastow failed to trouble the scorer in his three overs before being bowled by Patel.

And Moeen Ali was dismissed for an ignominious eight, crawling back to his own ground as Pant removed the bar – England were in deep trouble at 46/4 before the eighth over.

The next to fall was Curran, and as he tried to cross the goal line, Kuldeep Yadav thumped Curran’s front pad.

Harry Brook made a valiant effort to salvage the situation, scoring an admirable 25 runs off 19 balls before joining Kuldeep’s list of victims.

Two innings later, Jordan joined in, with a single called for a leg interception.

England were now 72/7, which meant they needed to score 100 runs in the remaining 46 balls.

Although Liam Livingstone was still in the batting line, he was dismissed for 11 in the next over.

Two balls later, Adil Rashid followed the same approach and took 2 runs while Archer and Topley tried to salvage some dignity, which they did and took England past the 100-run mark.

But it all ended when Archer was ruled out for leg-choke by Bumrah after scoring a brilliant 21 runs off 15 balls.

The clash between India and South Africa will be held at Kensington Oval at 10:30 am on Saturday. South Africa advanced to the final after defeating Afghanistan by nine wickets in the first semi-final in Trinidad on Wednesday. This is also the first time that South Africa has participated in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final.
