Lowrey Leon and Black Banana, With a strong Caribbean jazz fusion style, the audience can enjoy tapping the beats to the jazz music in the evening. KILOMBO Liberation Village, Haggatt Hall, St Michael’s, last Sunday.
Lowrey Leon, better known as Lowrey Worrell, Music Director National Youth Steel Orchestra The band, led by Andrew Woodvine, who is also a music teacher at the Foundation School, also includes saxophonist Andre Woodvine, bassist Neil Newton, jazz guitarist Darren Massiah, keyboardist Rafael Hinds and drummer Chadd Greaves.
The audience heard several songs from Leon’s album I am Barbados and feature Performed some of his own music with Woodvine.
The opening song is Morning Prayer Excerpted from the 2020 album feature. Bassist Newton also took the stage to perform a relaxing song called Bass love.
Woodvine is also an accomplished flutist; floating From his CD lemongrass. He performed brilliantly Roxy Roundabout The song was written by Barbadian jazz pianist Adrian Clarke, who based it on his experiences in Trinidad carnival This led to his break at the Roxy Roundabout.
At the end of the session, Leon presented a song titled garden From the upcoming album and sleeping Beauty From EP feature, Accompanied by Woodvine, Massiah and Greaves.
Earlier in the show, Leon also paid tribute to musician and keyboardist Roger Gittens, head of the music department at the Barbados Community College.
“It is an honor to be here today. I can speak to the place of responsibility for everyone on this stage. I am talking about the Barbados Community College and the music program, all of us are graduates of that program; in that program, all of the students have been mentored by Woodwayn,” Leon said.
“Whenever I’m on stage, there’s one person I have to ‘give credit to.’ I’m going to keep giving him credit until they give him an honorary doctorate in music education. That person is Mr. Roger Gittens.
“I’d say 80 percent of the musicians in Barbados are inspired by Roger Gittens,” he added. JS)
