MANILA, Philippines — The UST Growling Tigers impressed the crowd in the fourth game of the FilOil EcoOil Pre-Season Cup.
They really made an impression.
With the support of sponsor Alfrancis Chua, the Growling Tigers fought back in the fourth quarter to defeat the Ateneo Blue Eagles 63-52, recording their second pre-season win on Monday, May 27.
“He’s here to support us, not just in terms of sponsorship, but because he loves UST,” said Pido Jarencio, Cai’s head coach, who also provided advice from behind the Tigers’ bench during the tournament.
In addition to his role as San Miguel’s sports director, Mr Chua, an NUTM alumnus, was also appointed last year as special assistant to the university’s president for sports.
“We were happy that he watched the game, that some alumni came to watch our games again and that the UST community is growing in numbers,” said Jarencio, who was also in attendance as former Growling Tigers player Rhenz Abando attended.
The Tigers outscored the Blue Eagles 18-7 in the final quarter to break away from a close game that had been close for much of the game.
Fellow foreign student-athlete Mo Tounkara came off the bench in the Tigers’ first three games, and Peter Osang led UST with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 12 rebounds in his first preseason game for the team.
“We are testing our international student-athletes,” Jarencio said. “So we can be selective about who we use. At least, they are out there competing for that spot.”
Leland Estacio scored 11 points, while UST key players Nic Cabañero and Forthsky Padrigao struggled, combining for just nine points on 4-of-15 shooting.
After two straight wins, the Tigers are now 2-2 in the preseason after losing in straight games to the UAAP Season 86 champions La Salle Green Archers and runner-up UP Fighting Maroons.
But for Jarrencio, preseason wins are merely a good measure of themselves right now, not a barometer of how they will perform in the next UAAP season.
“We’re winning, but at the same time, this isn’t the UAAP. No matter who we face, we’re trying to adapt to what we’re building,” he said.
Meanwhile, Andrew Bongo led Ateneo de Manila with 11 points, while Chris Kuhn was limited to eight points on 1-of-12 shooting.
In the final match of the day, the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons maintained their undefeated record, defeating the winless Northwestern University Bulldogs 73-63.
Earlier, the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers defeated the East African Community Generals 73-66, the team’s first loss of the preseason, before the St. Sebastian Golden Deer narrowly defeated the Mapúa Cardinals 80-79.
At the end of the NCAA tournament, the Arellano Chiefs defeated Perpetual Help Altas 68-65.
