Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki had to retire from her quarter-final match at the Bad Homburg Open on Thursday due to a knee injury, while Paola Badosa was eliminated.
Danish wildcard Caroline Wozniacki faced third-seeded American Emma Navarro, who fell while winning the first set and appeared to have injured her knee.
The 33-year-old former Australian Open champion, who was trailing 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 when she retired, is keeping an eye on Wimbledon, which starts on Monday, as she prepares for the tournament, for which she also holds a wild card.
Spain’s former world number two Badosa, also a wild card, suffered a double fault in the second set and a brilliant second serve from Russian Diana Schneider before falling 6-3 7-6(3).
Schneider will face Navarro in the semifinals.
Donna Vekic of Croatia also made the semi-finals, winning easily as defending Czech champion Katerina Siniakova withdrew with a hip injury.
Vekic will face either Bulgaria’s Victoria Tomova or Russia’s Anna Blinkova in the semifinals, which will be played later Thursday.
