Apia, Samoa – June 26, 2024 The two young Samoan men who died in a car crash in Victoria, Australia yesterday were both recruited members of the Farelili seasonal workers group.

The news was confirmed by Falealili No. 1 MP, Communications and Information Technology Minister Toelupe Poumulinuku Onesemo.

He said the deceased and nine other suspects were from different villages in Samoa but were all recruited by the Falealili group.

Last Friday, Falealili celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Ptasi Seasonal Workers Group, which now covers the entire Falealili area.

Toelupe said it was sad that such a tragedy happened just days after celebrating the success and achievements of the program.

An official at the Treasury Department in Apia, which oversees the labour mobility program, said the office would liaise with program coordinators in Australia for updates before releasing information, particularly to the families of workers involved.

Sky News reports that the workers were travelling in a minibus that crashed at Carwarp Victoria at around 7am yesterday morning before overturning and hitting a tree.

One of the victims was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, while the seriously injured driver was transferred to Mildura Base Public Hospital.

Sky News further reported that according to police, “the minibus was involved in the crash while trying to overtake another vehicle on the Calder Highway between Kulkern Road and Brownport Road”.
