June 25, 2024 (Cairo) – Egypt hosts at least 672,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers from 62 countries, with Sudanese forming the largest group.
That number is more than double what it was a year ago, when there was major conflict along the country’s borders, according to the UN refugee agency.
Most refugees live in the capital, Cairo, and urban areas on the north coast.
The UN agency said that since April 2023, more than 617,000 people forced to flee Sudan have contacted its office in Egypt, and it is scaling up cash assistance and registration to meet the most urgent needs of new arrivals.
The United Nations Refugee Agency says the number of Sudanese registered as refugees has increased sixfold since the conflict in Sudan broke out in April 2023, mainly women and children.
The agency said the ongoing crisis in Gaza had further exacerbated the situation.
In response to the situation in Gaza, the UN Refugee Agency reportedly delivered water, clothing, blankets, oil drums and sleeping mats to Gaza through the Egyptian Red Crescent Society, and provided cash assistance to medical staff evacuated from Gaza to Egypt.
UNHCR began its operations in Egypt in 1954, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Egyptian Government and UNHCR. Since then, UNHCR has provided protection services to forcibly displaced persons, including registration, documentation, refugee status determination and resettlement.
