These tailor-made short courses are designed to meet the urgent need for climate change education.
The University of Namibia (Unam) and the Namibian Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) on Monday launched a series of short courses aimed at equipping Namibians with critical knowledge and skills in a move aimed at tackling climate change.
The two partners said in a media statement that the event highlighted the urgent need for climate change education.
“The collaboration between EIF and the National University of Mexico embodies a proactive approach to climate change education, aimed at building a knowledgeable, responsive community that is able to respond to environmental challenges. By offering these short courses, the National University of Mexico and EIF aim to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, which is essential to gain practical experience through field trips and case studies,” the statement read.
In his keynote speech, Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta commended EIF and Unam for spearheading this initiative and stressed its importance in the current climate situation.
“These short courses are NQA Level 8 accredited, providing a flexible study option for those who cannot take a long-term absence from school. This high academic standard also opens the door for students to pursue a Masters programme in 2025, providing seamless academic progression for those committed to developing their expertise in climate change,” said Shifeta.
Huge opportunity
Sifeta said he hoped the short courses would consolidate the country’s expertise and promote a collaborative approach to climate change education.
Shifeta said Namibia offers various opportunities to learn and grow in the field of climate change.
“I want to emphasize that the opportunities for learning and growth in Namibia are vast and growing, providing us with the tools to respond to climate change. By seizing these opportunities and the advantages they bring, and leveraging the latest research and innovation, we can build a more resilient, sustainable and prosperous future for all Namibians,” he said.
“The impacts of climate change are undeniable and the scientific evidence is clear,” said Karl Mutani Aribeb, EIF’s chief operating officer.
He added: “Our partnership with the National Autonomous University of Mexico to develop these custom short courses is in response to the urgent need for climate change education. This initiative empowers individuals with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to act as agents of change.”
Professor Cristina Stefan, UNAM’s Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Development, highlighted the diversity of the collaboration.
“The courses cover a wide range of topics including climate science, policy and governance, sustainable development, renewable energy and climate finance,” Stephen said.
She added that the comprehensive curriculum ensures participants gain a comprehensive understanding of current issues.
