KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Olympic Committee president will invite fans to help design the country’s next Olympic kit after the national costume for the Paris Olympics was criticised online.
The gold-themed outfit with tiger stripes, unveiled at the weekend, is designed to reflect Malaysia’s pursuit of gold medals, according to sports officials.
But they have also been criticised, with fans online calling the designs “ugly”, “cheap” or outdated and uninspired compared to previous designs.
The clothing included tracksuits, polo shirts and T-shirts, and some fans were unhappy with the way the clothes were displayed – they were shown on a series of mannequins.
Chef de Mission Hamidin Mohamad Amin acknowledged the criticisms on Tuesday (June 25) and said the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) may offer the public the opportunity to contribute their designs for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
He added that he also spoke to the committee’s chairman, Mohammad Noza Zakaria, following the criticism.
He added: “He basically agreed that next time we will open it up to fans to design the official uniforms for the next round of delegations and we might even offer prizes.”
Hamidin also admitted that it was a mistake to use mannequins to display the jerseys, which were unveiled during Olympic Day celebrations at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur.
Video footage from the ceremony showed the models were first wrapped in black cloth, which was then removed after the countdown. Celebratory music and sporadic applause rang out at the scene.
