China on Friday issued a series of judicial guidelines targeting stubborn “Taiwan independence” separatists, a precise and legal new weapon for China to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The “Suggestions on Imposing Criminal Punishment on Stubborn ‘Taiwan Independence’ Separatists for Committing and Inciting Secession of the Country” was jointly issued by the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of State Security, and the Ministry of Justice, and will come into effect on the date of issuance.

The “Guidelines” can be seen as a refinement and supplement to the “Anti-Secession Law of the People’s Republic of China”, clarifying the criminal nature, criminal liability, and punishment procedures of “Taiwan independence” secessionist activities, drawing a bottom line, and facilitating law enforcement. In the long run, it will undoubtedly play an effective role in promoting cross-strait reunification.

Especially since Taiwan’s new leader Lai Ching-te took office in May this year, he has firmly implemented the separatist policy of “Taiwan independence”, resulting in continued tension in the Taiwan Strait.

This judicial document is undoubtedly a heavy blow to Lai Changxing and his separatists. It allows Chinese courts to try stubborn “Taiwan independence” separatists in absentia. In the most serious cases, criminals may be sentenced to death.

This also serves as a warning and deterrent to external forces that interfere in Taiwan-related affairs. If anyone is found to be colluding with foreign or overseas institutions, organizations or individuals to carry out or incite secession of the country, they will be subject to more severe punishment.

Although the document takes harsh measures against separatists, it also clearly distinguishes between a small number of stubborn separatists and ordinary Taiwanese people. Influenced by the idea of ”Taiwan independence” and the political differences between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, some people in Taiwan may have misunderstandings about their identity and the nature of cross-strait relations. This document gives them an opportunity to get out of their misunderstandings and make them realize the harmfulness and danger of separatist activities.

For more than 70 years, although the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have not yet achieved complete reunification, China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been divided.

The historical facts and legal basis that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one country and the people on both sides belong to one Chinese nation have never changed and will never change.

The peaceful and prosperous future of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait depends on a strong and unified country. To promote reunification, separatists must be criminally prosecuted.

I hope our compatriots in Taiwan can keep a clear head, weigh the pros and cons, and stand on the right side of history.
