St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Environmental officials from Taiwan’s technical delegation will soon pass the torch to the St. Kitts and Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority to continue the federation’s recycling efforts.
In preparation for the transition, St. Kitts Solid Waste Management Corporation and Nevis Solid Waste Authority staff have been in discussions focusing on recycling data management, recycling operations and equipment usage.
In the solid waste management and recycling project, the Taiwanese led a program to collect plastic containers and ship them overseas to reduce waste in the federation. They placed plastic waste bins in strategic areas across the federation and participated in various community events to raise awareness of plastic waste and the importance of recycling. One of their signature initiatives is a recycling competition for primary schools.
Just this Friday, May 1, Taiwanese officials participated in a ceremony announcing the shipment of two 40-foot containers filled with plastic recyclables from Nevis.
The St. Kitts Solid Waste Management Recycling Project was launched on June 20, 2022, in line with the Federation’s sustainable development goals.
The recycling program collected 38,749 pounds of recycled plastic in 2022 and another 73,492 pounds in 2023.
In January 2024, stakeholders met to discuss the second phase of the recycling project, which will begin in July. The focus will be on cardboard and tires.
