SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower clarified on Monday (June 24) that the visa application of a shipping company’s chief executive officer was rejected as he failed to provide supporting documents by the deadline.
The Financial Times reported earlier this month that Singapore had “refused” to renew the work visa of Red Box Energy Services CEO Philip Adkins after the US found the company had violated sanctions against Russia.
Adkins told the Financial Times that because Red Box is based in Singapore, the refusal to renew his visa “effectively forced him to resign”.
He added: “Although I do not agree with sanctions, I accept the consequences of them.”
In response to CNA’s queries, the Ministry of Manpower said Red Box submitted an employment pass (EP) renewal application for Mr Adkins to the ministry in December last year.
However, the application was rejected in February this year as “the necessary supporting documents were not provided before the deadline stipulated in the application process”, the Ministry of Manpower said.
“Red Box Energy Services submitted a second EP renewal application for Philip Adkins on March 6, 2024, along with the required documentation. The application is currently being assessed.”
In May this year, Red Box was sanctioned by the United States for shipping materials to Russia for the construction of a liquefied natural gas project in the Arctic Circle, the Financial Times reported.
The UK reportedly added Red Box to its sanctions list earlier this month.
Mr Adkins, who himself was not subject to any sanctions, argued at the time that the building materials were “simple steel framing” and therefore the company had not violated sanctions, the article said.
